Sea Monster! by Jordan Quinn (#3 in The Kingdom of Wrenly series)

Synopsis

“Something has been creating giant waves around Wrenly, and it’s not the tides. Prince Lucas is sure that it’s the mysterious sea monster that has only been heard of in tall tales. Now it’s frightening everyone in the kingdom! With the help of his best friend Clara, Prince Lucas sets out to find the fearsome beast.”

My Thoughts

The third installment in the Kingdom of Wrenly series, Sea Monster! follows Lucas and Clara’s journey to find out if there really is a fearsome beast lurking in the waters surrounding their home. If you like a bit of mystery mixed in with fantasy, then Sea Monster will be right up your alley.

What starts as just a typical day in the kingdom soon becomes a quest for answers. Lucas’ father, King Caleb, is troubled by reports from the local fishermen. While most people believe that the troubled waters are a sign of an impending storm, Lucas believes it is the work of the Great Sea Serpent. Together with Clara, the two heroes set out to learn more about the mythical beast and if they can do anything to help. This novel has a faster tempo than the previous installments, which is great for holding children’s attention!

One aspect I’ve enjoyed so far about this series is the variety of stories told by Jordan Quinn. When writing for children, it’s vital to provide different themes and tones in their stories. Children need to have variety and diversity, whether a story teaches a lesson, tells a heartwarming tale, or pulls its reader along on a thrilling adventure. It’s something the Kingdom of Wrenly series has done well so far, and I hope they continue to do so.

Young children will definitely find Sea Monster an exciting and enjoyable read. Not only does the book expand upon the existing lore already established in previous stories, but it also takes its readers on a fun journey with two loveable protagonists. As we go further and further along with Lucas and Clara, I’m excited to go on more adventures and learn more about this world and witness these two protagonists grow and develop as a result of their experiences.

Memorable Quotes:

“Then something unimaginable happened. A creature began to rise from the water. It rose higher and higher – above and beyond the mast of the Blue Moon. It had the head of a dragon, with two horns and a mouth full of daggerlike teeth. The creature had a never-ending neck of green scales for a body, like an enormous snake.”

“Lucas folded his arms. ‘There’s one thing I don’t get.’

‘What’s that?’ asked the king.

‘How come people get scared when they hear rumors of a sea serpent? And then, if someone actually finds one, they don’t believe it?’

‘Well,’ said the king, ‘sometimes you have to see something in order to believe it.’”
