Book Review
Finally – we have a book from Diana’s point of view! Don’t get me wrong, I love the stories from Bruce’s and Clark’s perspectives, but I’m so happy to see things through a different lens. Diana has an upbeat outlook on the world while also being somewhat grounded. The character elements of this series are the best part for me. It’s a graphic novel series for children, so the plot is not particularly complex or lengthy, but the characters are undoubtedly the best part.
In Field Trip Disaster, we start with Diana becoming a student orientation leader. One of the new students, Irma Ardeen, tends to disappear and doesn’t appear in any school records, leading to the gang wondering who she is. Diana questions her about her true intentions. Irma says she will explain everything to Diana, but they have to travel back to Irma’s home. However, Clark and Bruce jump in the last minute and get sucked in with the girls. It turns out that Irma is from the future, and she needs their help. Someone has disrupted events and
I like how Diana, Bruce, and Clark have a great feel for each other and work well together at this point in the journey. They know each other’s tendencies, complement each other, learn and grow from each other, and of course, have a solid friendship at the foundation of it all. And they like to tease each other and have fun as well. We also see growth from the characters; they learn from their mistakes and become more confident in themselves and each other.
I love how the tone of this story has Diana as leader of the group and Bruce and Clark as the loveable sidekick-type. While the two boys tend to act impulsively and use force to solve problems, Diana is the voice of reason (at least in this story, haha). There’s one situation in the book that perfectly sums up this dynamic and the characters. The Big Three are looking for Priscilla Rich and find out that she has a bad record. Clark is concerned with her intentions, Bruce wants to bring her to justice, and Diana wants to solve the problem peacefully.
My biggest critique of this story is the number of events happening to jump around. And yeah, I know it’s a story about time travel, so it’s going to be a bit confusing. It’s not a massive problem as the story is still amusing and entertaining. If you’re looking for an action-packed adventure involving our three heroes, this is the story for you.
